Tokyo – September 28, 2020 – “Nikkei Medical Online” (https://medical.nikkeibp.co.jp/), a dedicated website for medical professionals operated by Nikkei Business Publications (President & CEO: Naoto Yoshida; Minato-ku, Tokyo) has achieved the doctors membership exceeding 180,000. That is to say, approx. 55% of the total of 327,210 doctors in Japan*1 is using “Nikkei Medical Online”. Reflecting the increasing needs for medical information, new registrations by doctors have accelerated, to exceed 180,000 members in only eight months since January 2020 when the membership exceeded 170,000.
“Nikkei Medical Online” is a comprehensive information website for medical professionals mainly including doctors, pharmacists, and nurses. It is membership-based in order to deliver medical specialized information and 180,000 doctors have become members after strict qualification verification. The breakdown of doctors is: approx. 146,000 hospital doctors, 7,000 hospital presidents/directors, and 27,000 clinic presidents/directors. The registered membership including pharmacists and nurses now totaled approx. 794,000.
With the outbreak of coronavirus, the needs from doctors to collect specialized information using internet is rapidly growing. In response to this, “Nikkei Medical Online” increased the number of deliveries of timely and highly original articles by receiving cooperation of interviews and contributed articles by doctors who are active in the front lines of clinical practice, and we actively support information providing activities by pharmaceutical companies including “Web Lectures” and “e-Detail”. As a result, the latest performance of the website has significantly improved. The number of monthly views (page view) by doctor members has strongly grown by approx. 50% compared to the previous year.
The survey of doctors about collection of medical information*2 showed the purpose of using “Nikkei Medical Online” (multiple responses) was “to check the latest developments in medical science” which had the highest proportion at 57.4%, followed by “to improve knowledge on clinical practice” (39.7%) and “to check the social news” (33.5%). The site is utilized as a useful information source for daily medical practices. In addition, “Nikkei Medical Online” has received a recognition as the most “reliable” site among medical-related information service websites by other operators.
